Data Usage Policy

Data Usage Policy

  • Mission scientific and model results are open to all. A goal of the GUVI Data Processing effort is to provide as much information as early as possible to the public, educators, and people interested in the data. These data may not be "certified". The certification of the data products involves the validation of the calibration factors used to go from engineering units to physical units and the validation of the data product algorithms themselves. Instrument operating parameters also affect the instrument and algorithm performance.
  • Users are encouraged to contact the PI Dr. Larry Paxton ( early in an analysis project to discuss the appropriate use of instrument¬† data or model results. This applies to TIMED mission and GUVI team members, guest investigators, and other members of the scientific community or general public. GUVI data products posted on this Web site are primarily intended to assist in focusing research efforts. Such research efforts may involve detailed analysis of lower level data types and products.
  • Users who wish to publish the results derived from GUVI data are encouraged to offer co-authorship to the PI or his/her designated team member. Co-authorship may be declined but serves to provide some assurance that the GUVI data is valid and trusted. Appropriate acknowledgement to institutions, personnel, and funding agencies are encouraged to¬† be given.
  • Users are encouraged to heed the caveats of investigators as to the interpretation and limitations of GUVI data, error estimates, and data products. Investigators supplying data or models may recommend that such caveats be published, even if co-authorship is declined. Data and model version numbers are encouraged to also be specified to ensure provenance of the GUVI data.
  • Pre-prints of publications and conference abstracts are encouraged to be widely distributed to interested parties within the mission and related projects.

All users should include an acknowledgement of the source of the GUVI data similar to:

The GUVI data used here are provided through support from the NASA MO&DA program. The GUVI instrument was designed and built by The Aerospace Corporation and The Johns Hopkins University. The Principal Investigator is Dr. Larry J. Paxton.
