The Delayed Ionospheric Response to the 27-day Solar Rotation Period Analyzed With GOLD and IGS TEC Data

The delayed ionospheric response is analyzed for two well-defined 27-day solar rotation periods in the year 2019 with solar radio flux index F10.7 and Global-scale Observations of the Limb and Disk (GOLD) data, like solar extreme ultraviolet (EUV) flux proxy, O/N2 column density ratio and peak electron density, as well as International Global Navigation Satellite System Service rapid high-rate total electron content (TEC) map data. Although the correlation between GOLD solar EUV flux proxy and TEC is similar to the correlati ...

On the difference between real-time and research simulations with CTIPe

Understanding the thermosphere and ionosphere conditions is crucial for spacecraft operations and many applications using radio signal transmission (e.g. in communication and navigation). In this sense, physics based modelling plays an important role, since it can adequately reproduce the complex coupling mechanisms in the magnetosphere-ionosphere-thermosphere (MIT) system. The accuracy of the physics based model results does not only depend on the appropriate implementation of the physical processes, but also on the quality ...

Ionospheric response to solar EUV variations: Preliminary results

We investigate the ionospheric response to solar Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) variations using different proxies, based on solar EUV spectra observed from the Solar Extreme Ultraviolet Experiment (SEE) onboard the Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellite, the F10.7 index (solar irradiance at 10.7cm), and the Bremen composite Mg-II index during January 2003 to December 2016. The daily mean solar proxies are compared with global mean Total Electron Content (GTEC) values calculated from globa ...

How might the thermosphere and ionosphere react to an extreme space weather event?

This chapter explores how the thermosphere and ionosphere (T-I) might respond to extreme solar events. Three different scenarios are considered: (1) an increase in solar UV and EUV radiation for a number of days, (2) an extreme enhancement in the solar X-rays and EUV radiation associated with a flare, and (3) an extreme CME driving a geomagnetic storm. Estimating the response to the first two scenarios is reasonably well defined, and although they would certainly impact the T-I system, those impacts could potentially be miti ...

The Global-Scale Observations of the Limb and Disk (GOLD) Mission

The Earth\textquoterights thermosphere and ionosphere constitute a dynamic system that varies daily in response to energy inputs from above and from below. This system can exhibit a significant response within an hour to changes in those inputs, as plasma and fluid processes compete to control its temperature, composition, and structure. Within this system, short wavelength solar radiation and charged particles from the magnetosphere deposit energy, and waves propagating from the lower atmosphere dissipate. Understand ...

Electric field variability and model uncertainty: A classification of source terms in estimating the squared electric field from an electric field model

Joule heating by high-latitude electric fields is thought to be underestimated by electric field models, and it has been conjectured that the source of the underestimation is “electric field variability,” although the interpretation of this term is not necessarily straightforward. We perform a classification of source terms in estimating the squared magnitude of electric field from an electric field model, and find that the phenomenon summarily referred to as electric field variability canonically decomposes into two dis ...

Modeling storm-time electrodynamics of the low-latitude ionosphere–thermosphere system: Can long lasting disturbance electric fields be accounted for?

Storm-time ionospheric disturbance electric fields are studied for two large geomagnetic storms, March 31, 2001 and April 17–18, 2002, by comparing low-latitude observations of ionospheric plasma drifts with results from numerical simulations based on a combination of first-principles models. The simulation machinery combines the Rice convection model (RCM), used to calculate inner magnetospheric electric fields, and the coupled thermosphere ionosphere plasmasphere electrodynamics (CTIPe) model, driven, in part, by RCM-com ...
