Design of FUV imaging spectrometer based on crossed Czerny-Turner structure

This article describes the characteristics of the far ultraviolet (FUV) radiation and its applications in the space weather s research and prediction. The FUV imaging spectrometer is irreplaceable to get the FUV radiation data of the earth s upper atmosphere. Some key technologies of FUV spectrometer are analyzed respectively, including window materials, FUV light source, FUV detectors and FUV coating, which offer theoretical foundation for FUV imaging spectrometer. The paper presents a FUV band imaging spectrometer s optica ...

Ionospheric storm time dynamics as seen by GPS tomography and in situ spacecraft observations

During major geomagnetic storms anomalous enhancements of the ionospheric density are seen at high and middle latitudes. However, it remains unclear which mechanism plays the dominant role in the formation of storm time density anomalies, partly because of insufficient coverag ...

Longitudinal variations of electron temperature and total ion density in the sunset equatorial topside ionosphere

Based on the DMSP F13 Satellite observations from 1995 to 2005, the longitudinal distributions of the electron temperature (Te) and total ion density (Ni) in the sunset equatorial topside ionosphere are examined. The results suggest that the longitudinal variations of both Te and Ni exhibit obvious seasonal dependence as follows: (1) wavenumber-four longitudinal structure in equinox, (2) three peaks structure in June solstice, and (3) two peaks structure in December solstice. Moreover, the longitudinal variations of Te and N ...

The linkage between the ring current and the ionosphere system

The coupling between the ring current and the ionosphere is briefly reviewed and discussed. Given global energetic neutral atom (ENA) observations of the ring current, the three-dimensional current system driven by ring current plasma pressure (the region 2 system) is derived to illustrate where the ring current connects to the ionosphere. Special attention is given to how the ring current and ionospheric conductance set up the sub-auroral polarization streams (SAPS) through the closure of the region 2 current through the io ...

Testing regional vertical total electron content maps over Europe during the 17—21 January 2005 sudden space weather event

The intense level of solar activity recorded from 16 to 23 January 2005 led to a series of events with different signatures at the Earth s ionospheric distances. Measurements of the critical frequency of the F 2 layer f o F 2 and the vertical total electron content (VTEC) are used to describe the temporal and spatial electron density distributions during this space weather event, which gives an excellent opportunity to test regional VTEC maps over Europe under such disturbed solar-terrestrial conditions. In this context, the ...

Modeling storm-time electrodynamics of the low-latitude ionosphere–thermosphere system: Can long lasting disturbance electric fields be accounted for?

Storm-time ionospheric disturbance electric fields are studied for two large geomagnetic storms, March 31, 2001 and April 17–18, 2002, by comparing low-latitude observations of ionospheric plasma drifts with results from numerical simulations based on a combination of first-principles models. The simulation machinery combines the Rice convection model (RCM), used to calculate inner magnetospheric electric fields, and the coupled thermosphere ionosphere plasmasphere electrodynamics (CTIPe) model, driven, in part, by RCM-com ...
