onosphere-thermosphere science has long been hampered by a lack of measurements of the underlying forces that determine plasma structure. These forces include electric fields, thermospheric composition, winds and solar EUV irradiance. All of these forces are dynamic quantities and of great importance to the underlying science. The rapid proliferation of electron density and total electron content measurements from ground and space-borne GPS receivers and other instruments suggests a great potential in the following indirect ... The data from ground based experiments conducted during the 2005 SpreadFEx campaign in Brazil are used, with the help of theoretical model calculations, to investigate the precursor conditions, and especially, the role of gravity waves, in the instability initiation leading to equatorial spread F development. Data from a digisonde and a 30 MHz coherent back-scatter radar operated at an equatorial site, Sao Luis (dip angle: 2.7\textdegree) and from a digisonde operated at another equatorial site (dip angle: -11.5\textdegre ... Overview and summary of the Spread F Experiment (SpreadFEx) We provide here an overview of, and a summary of results arising from, an extensive experimental campaign (the Spread F Experiment, or SpreadFEx) performed from September to November 2005, with primary measurements in Brazil. The motivation was to define the potential role of neutral atmosphere dynamics, specifically gravity wave motions propagating upward from the lower atmosphere, in seeding Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI) and plasma bubbles extending to higher altitudes. Campaign measurements focused on the Brazilian ... Seasonal variation of thermospheric density and composition Thermospheric neutral density and composition exhibit a strong seasonal variation, with maxima near the equinoxes, a primary minimum during northern hemisphere summer, and a secondary minimum during southern hemisphere summer. This pattern of variation is described by thermospheric empirical models. However, the mechanisms are not well understood. The annual insolation variation due to the Sun-Earth distance can cause an annual variation, large-scale interhemispheric circulation can cause a global semiannual variation, an ... In the descent to solar minimum in solar cycle 23-24, the high-speed streams (HSS) were faster and longer lived than previous cycles but the average IMF was weaker and the average solar wind density lower than ever before recorded upstream of the Earth. A simulation of high speed stream activity on 22-24 January 2005 using the BATS-R-US MHD model with embedded Rice Convection Model driven by solar wind inputs indicates that, at least for this event, the interaction between high speed streams and the magnetosphere has been mo ... Solar wind structure sources and periodicities of auroral electron power over three solar cycles We assess the contributions of various types of solar wind structures (transients, coronal hole high-speed streams (HSS), and slow-speed wind) to hourly average auroral electron power (Pe). The time variation of the solar wind velocity (Vsw) and Pe are determined by HSS, which contribute ∼47\% to Pe and Vsw. Transients contribute ∼42\% of Pe in solar maxima, and ∼6\% in solar minimum. Cross-correlations of Pe with Vsw|B| for negative Bz are significant. Pe exhibits solar rotational periodicities similar to those for Vs ... The long-duration positive ionospheric storm effect that occurred on 15 December 2006 is investigated using a combination of ground-based Global Positioning System (GPS) total electron content (TEC), TOPEX and Jason-1 TEC, and topside ionosphere/plasmasphere TEC, GPS radio occultation, and tiny ionospheric photometer (TIP) observations from the Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate (COSMIC) satellites. Reversed ionospheric convections during the November 2004 storm: Impact on the upper atmosphere Using the Assimilative Mapping of Ionospheric Electrodynamics (AMIE) procedure, a particular period (2000–2350 UT on 9 November) in the November 2004 storm is studied. During this time interval, IMF Bz was strongly northward along with a high solar wind dynamic pressure, favorable conditions to form reversed convection in the polar region. Indeed, the AMIE outputs show strong reversed convection cells in both hemispheres for a long period (>1 h), which have rarely been observed. The impact on the thermospheric neutral wind ...
